Primary care paramedics
People employed as primary care paramedics are the ones who respond to medical emergencies. In Alberta, primary care paramedics or PCPs are still termed Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). PCPs are individuals who have received only a year of paramedical training and are only authorized to perform a limited number of medical procedures. PCPs are allowed to perform immobilization in cases of trauma, administer symptom relief medication (such as oxygen or ventolin among others), administer, read and interpret ECGs, and perform semi to automated external defibrillation. In some cases, PCPs are allowed to undergo advanced training in other procedures that ACPs or Advanced care paramedics should perform.
Advanced care paramedics
People employed as advanced care paramedics or ACPs in Alberta perform more complex medical procedures such as airway management through intubation to allow patients to breathe when normal airways are blocked. They also assess obstetrical situations, reverse hypoglycemic states through administration of necessary drugs and deal with pain management by providing pharmacological treatment. Depending on the area, ACPs may carry upto 20 types of medication.
Critical care paramedics
Critical care paramedics are professionals trained to facilitate the transfer of high-risk patients via air or ground transport. Aside from being able to perform all the tasks that PCPs and ACPs can, when a CCP is not available, a doctor or a nurse will be asked to join the team instead. CCPs are well-trained medical professionals who can administer advanced medical procedures such as rapid sequence intubation, chest x-ray and cranial CT scan interpretation, and intravenous blood product administration during the transport.
