Mining Jobs in Alberta

The mining industry in Alberta has been the driving force behind its thriving economy. Aside from earning a killing in profits, job opportunities have been made available to Albertans, people from other provinces, and even other countries as well.

Coal

Alberta has an estimated 33.6 Gigatonnes of natural coal deposits, taking up 70 percent of Canada's reserves. There are many industries and companies tapping this rich resource, not only to provide energy for Canada, but also for other countries. Aside from largely contributing to the province's and the country's economy, coal industries have also provided a lot of job opportunities for the people of Alberta for the longest time. Though the coal resources of Alberta is vast, the government has taken steps to conserve these riches, and of the environment as well.

Oil

Rich sources of oil and petroleum have been discovered in Alberta particularly in the region around Edmonton. This area has been dubbed the Oil Capital of Canada as it has provided employment opportunities since the 1950s. Towns and cities around this area could even attribute their existence to the early settlers of oil workers. Currently, there are still a lot of opportunities in the oil-rigging industry around these areas.

Tar sands

Though oil and petroleum are extracted in various parts of Alberta, a different type of fuel can also be mined. The Tar Sands of Athabasca are far richer sources of fuel, reputedly having as much as two thirds of the world's oil reserve after processing. Employment opportunities in this sector are rife, as extracting the oil from the oil sands is a more complex proccess and requires a lot of manpower.

Non-fuel minerals

Diamond and gold are the top non-fuel minerals that are being mined in Alberta. Other mining jobs may involve mining other metallic minerals such as silver, platinum, gold, iron, nickel, lead, and zinc. Industrial minerals such as gypsum and salt and for building materials such as limestone, sandstone, and granite can also be mined for profit in Alberta.
